Review: Is Apple’s Silicone Case really worth its expensive price tag?
Due to the lack of hardware changes, iPhone 8 can really be regarded as iPhone 7. The only major change in iPhone 8 is the application of the glass back cover to allow wireless charging. The biggest change is the upgrade of a new A11 processor and improved camera performance under the hood. I've always been a fan of the Plus version of the iPhone because I know what I want. As we get older, the excitement of new phones and their novel features has gradually diminished. I upgraded my iPhone 6S Plus to iPhone 8 Plus to enjoy dual cameras and enhanced camera performance. The $799 price tag is a tough pill to swallow, which is why I immediately bought a protective case for my phone. I decided to have Apple’s official silicone case in Midnight Blue color.
This Silicone Case is what you may expect from Apple products: aesthetically beautiful. Although it is made of silicone, the handfeel of the case is premium, which you cannot have with most silicone cases. The third-party silicone sleeves I bought in the past few years do a good job of basic protection, but they feel cheap.
The cutout fits perfectly with the volume rocker and sleep / wake button. The silicone case provides a small lip that prevents the screen from making physical contact with the table when the phone is facing down. The case ends before reaching the bottom of the phone, while the dual speakers and lightning port are left bare. I really like this design choice because when you press the thumb to unlock the phone, the lips are not getting in the way.
My only concern with Apple's silicone case is that it is a bit slippery. Not slippery to drop, but not as grippy as I would want it to be. This is due to the soft silicone material. The inside of the case has a soft microfiber lining to protect your iPhone from scratches.
If I was looking for the thinnest case, I would not choose this silicone case. I think this case adds a little bulk. However, I don't mind sacrificing slenderness for protection. Having dropped my iPhone several times from distances from ear to hip height, there is not a shred evidence that my phone suffered any damage from falling. My 9.7-inch iPad Pro is also covered with a silicone case. Even after 8 months of heavy use, the case still looks brand new. I am very confident that if I accidentally drop my iPhone 8 Plus from a reasonable distance, it will not break. If you're looking for a protective case to withstand the worst conditions, click here.
If you are looking for a premium-feel high quality protective case, I would recommend no other than Apple's silicone case. The silicone case looks and feels deluxe, which is what Apple is known for. You'll also get a durable case that protects your phone from accidental drops. Even after months of heavy use, Apple's silicone protective case will still look brand new, which means you will spend less money to replace the worn protective case. Note that the price for this case is as high as $39. However, I firmly believe that the high cost is worth every penny, because I know that I don't have to replace the case before upgrading to a new phone.
